During the winter months, charter companies offer sailing charters in the Bahamas, particularly in the Abacos or the Exumas.
The Abacos
The Abacos, the northernmost island chain in the Bahamas, is renowned as the Sailing Capital of the World. Sailing in the shallow, protected waters of the Sea of Abaco is a dream come true, with rays gliding beneath your boat visible through the crystal-clear waters.
More populated than the Exumas, the Abacos offer numerous beach bars and restaurants without feeling overcrowded.
Somewhere along the 120-mile stretch of pale-sanded islands and often uninhabited cays, you're sure to find the perfect private spot to enjoy a good book and a glass of wine, or simply marvel at the beauty of your surroundings.
For those interested in underwater wildlife, Pelican Cay National Park and Fowl Cay National Park, both underwater sea parks, are a snorkeler's paradise.
Sample Itinerary in the Abacos:
Day 1: Arrival in Marsh Harbour, a short taxi ride to the harbor where you'll meet the Captain and board. Relax or explore Marsh Harbour's shops and sights. Appetizers and rum drinks aboard Civil Twilight, anchored in Marsh Harbour, cap off the day.
Day 2: Sail across the Sea of Abaco to Guana Cay, home of the famous "Nippers." Enjoy the restaurant/beach bar atop a hill with stunning ocean views. The 7-mile beach below is perfect for walks, swimming, and snorkeling around the offshore reef.
Day 3 & 4: Weather permitting, sail to Green Turtle Cay, known for sandy, uninhabited beaches ideal for diving, snorkeling, and spearfishing. Explore New Plymouth, a quaint fishing settlement with New England architecture painted in Bahamian colors.
Day 5: Return via "The Whale" to Treasure Cay on Great Abaco, home to one of National Geographic's "10 Best Beaches in the World." Enjoy 18 holes of golf or simply relax by the pool with a cocktail. The marina offers fishing charters for bonefishing or offshore excursions.
Day 6: Optional day at Treasure Cay or explore another island or spot missed earlier in the week. The itinerary is flexible to your preferences.
Day 7: Sail back to Marsh Harbour, saying farewell until next time.
Many repeat visitors to The Bahamas still seek the elusive green flash—a natural tropical phenomenon visible during sunset on cloudless days. Watching the sun set into the ocean is the best chance to witness this spectacular sight.
